Community update on a current I.T. project
Over the summer I.T. began implementing a new system called LanRev which will help us track and manage the College's computer hardware and software. Many colleges and universities are implementing similar systems to get a better handle on their assets. Most find that better information leads to greater efficiency in I.T. operations and ultimately to cost savings. In addition, LanRev has capabilities which will allow us to automate updating and management of computers, especially in labs and classrooms. Updates help to keep computers resistant to viruses and operating properly.
The LanRev server gathers its asset information by means of a small program installed on each "client" computer. I.T. staff have already begun installing the client in the student computing labs. Soon we will begin installing it more widely, with the ultimate goal of having it on every computer owned by the College.
The LanRev program should be invisible to you as a computer user. However, if you see that name on your computer somewhere, it is not some new virus or spam. It will become a normal part of a College computer installation and should not affect your using the computer. If you have any questions, please contact Marylin Bell, HelpDesk.
