A Message from the President: Reasons to Support Sellinger Funding

PROACTIVELY STATING THE CASE FOR MICUA Institutions is vital. As members of the McDaniel family we all have the opportunity to share the following messages to advocate for the Sellinger grant among our friends and fellow state taxpayers. With our funding under attack all of us on campus should be prepared to state the arguments in favor of our continued funding. We recognize that the financial aid provided through this Sellinger grant is critical for our students here. It is important to remember that McDaniel College uses the Sellinger money almost entirely for financial aid and to support the state’s critical priorities. Please read these talking points. Thank you.

State aid to independent higher education institutions should continue because these academic communities make a difference in the lives of the people who live and work in Maryland. Independent higher education is willing to take cuts like everyone else, but independent higher education has been cut far out of proportion to public higher education.

Maryland independent colleges and universities:

- Generate $165 for each dollar received in state aid and contributing $6.6 billion to the Maryland economy.

- Confer 24 percent – nearly one in four – of all higher education degrees awarded in the state.

- Produce 36 percent of new teacher candidates, 48 percent of B.S. degrees in nursing, and 27 percent of all degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics – all areas experiencing workforce shortages.

- Graduate a higher percentage of students in four years than the public institutions.

- Educate 28,000 Maryland students a year, which is more than half of the 52,000 students enrolled in the state’s independent colleges and universities. At McDaniel, 65 percent of our 1,700 undergraduate students and 83 percent of our 1,900 graduate students come from Maryland.

- Offer an accessible and affordable alternative to public higher education with the help of state aid. Our comprehensive financial-aid packages often keep the cost of independent colleges and universities to less than a public institution – not only giving Maryland’s best and brightest extraordinary educational opportunities but helping to keep them close to home.

- Provide three times more financial aid in need-based grants than state and federal governments combined. Consider this: MICUA schools provide 76 percent of need-based grant aid through private and institutional resources, while only 10 percent of need-based aid is provided by the state and 14 percent by the federal government.

- Reach out to their Maryland communities through student service groups and individual volunteer work. During the 2008-09 academic year, McDaniel students volunteered nearly 2,800 hours through class service-learning projects and internships alone – and, McDaniel Greek organizations logged more than 3,000 hours of community service.

- Reach out to their Maryland communities with free and open-to-the-public cultural and athletic events. McDaniel enhances the quality of life in its central Maryland community through a rich diversity of cultural, recreational and learning opportunities, attracting business, industry and families to the area and serving citizens of all ages.
